The Sociological Cinema
There was actually research that was done that found that women who used an “I have a boyfriend/husband” excuse to reject unwanted sexual attention and harassment by their bosses were more likely to be left alone than those who used any other excuse (including “I’m not interested”)
Because men respect another man’s property (and that’s how they see us) than a woman’s autonomy.
and then there’s the really shitty people who respond to “i have a boyfriend” (i really do) with “well leave him / he doesn’t have to know / it’s just a coffee date” like no, fff.
Those really shitty people hear “I have a boyfriend” and think “competition time!” I have never told somebody that I have a boyfriend and been left alone afterwards. The guy always immediately decides to show me how much better he is than my actual boyfriend. Spoiler alert: He never is better than my actual boyfriend.
Or even worse. When you say “I’m not interested, I have a girlfriend.” And you get the “Oh shit man that is HOT, can I watch??”
